The union specializes in studying Stone Age artifacts, diggings of the ancient Slavic settlements in Moscow and Moscow Oblast, Kaliningrad and Western Belarus . Nowadays the Union is working mainly in two directions – these are metal search and the search of late Middle Age villages that disappeared after Polish Lithuanian invasion (early 17 th century).

The Union was established under the initiative of the Senior Archeologist of Miscow Alexander Veskler. In 1978 “Young archeologist” circle society started to work in Zelenograd. In course of time it turned out to Archaeological Union. Both children and grown-ups as well as those who are interested in the history of our land took active part in it.

Since 1984 the Union has been a separate subdivision of Archaeological Institute of the Academy of Science of the USSR . Every year upon the governmental approval archaeological diggings in Podmoskovye, Zelenograd and Solnechnogorsk regions are conducted.

Since 1992 the studies have been realized on the basis of Zelenograd Museum of local history and lore. The found artifacts made it possible to organize exhibitions at schools and enterprises of our city as well as to set a Local History Department in our museum. Since that time the Department has been directed by Alexander Neklyudov, a Head of the Union, Archaeological and Local History Department supervisor, research specialist of the museum, author of 200 scientific articles on archaeology, local history, numismatics and faleristics in academy editions and of more than 100 articles in the press of Moscow and Solnechnogorsk. Nowadays the Union is a separate subdivision based on the museum and junior center “Vostok”.

During the time that this Union operates there have been found 20 unknown settlements of the Stone Age, 9 ancient Slavic settlements and 6 groups of ancient Slavic cemeteries in the suburbs of Moscow.

Moreover in the late nineties in the territory of north-western Podmoskovye with the participation of the Union an ancient settlement that would be further called Lyalovo was discovered. The investigation showed that this place was populated during the Paleolithic period which is about 13 000 years ago. Here were found about 25 000 exhibits, including weapon, household items and labour tools. It was there that the ritual complex and other interesting artifacts were found, one of them is a little God that the women of the settlement supposedly worshiped.
